The International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) recommends a low GI diet for managing gestational diabetes (GDM)

In their recently released guidelines, Initiative on gestational diabetes mellitus: A pragmatic guide for diagnosis, management, and care, the The International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) recommend a a minimum of 175g of carbohydrate per day, distributed in three small-to-moderate sized meals and 2−4 snacks, and a focus on lower GI foods.

They say that “Low GI diets are associated with less frequent insulin use and lower birth weight than in control diets, suggesting that it is the most appropriate dietary intervention to be prescribed to patients with GDM”.
