Pre-pregnancy low carb diet linked with gestational diabetes risk

A new study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition has found that women who follow a low carbohydrate diet high in protein and fat from animal foods are more likely to develop gestational diabetes (GDM, or diabetes in pregnancy).  However the same risk wasn’t seen when the protein and fat was from vegetable sources.  The researchers conclude that if women of reproductive age choose to follow a low-carb diet they should choose more vegetable sources of fat and protein to reduce their risk of GDM.
