Low maternal vitamin D levels linked to small birth weight babies

A new study published in the Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism has found that mothers with low vitamin D levels are more likely to give birth to babies who are underweight. Women whose vitamin D levels were 37.5nmol/L or greater were found to be half as likely to have a small for gestational weight baby compared to those whose levels were less than 37.5nmol/L. The researchers suggest that further studies are needed to determine whether vitamin D supplementation might improve fetal growth. Read more about the study here.
