Exposure to smoking in utero increases future risk of gestational diabetes & obesity

The findings of a new study published in the journal Diabetologia provides women with another reason not to smoke during pregnancy. The Swedish study of more than 80000 women found that those born to women who smoked during pregnancy had a 52-62% higher risk of developing gestational diabetes when they became pregnant themselves. Those exposed to moderate smoking (1-9 cigarettes/day) also had a 36% higher risk of obesity while those exposed to heavy smoking (more than 9 cigarettes/day) were 58% more likely to become obese.
