Eating a low GI diet in early pregnancy may protect against childhood obesity

A new study has found that children of women who ate a low glycemic index (GI) diet in early pregnancy had lower body fat levels at ages 4 and 6 years.

A group of UK researchers studied more than 900 mothers and their children taking part in the Southampton Women’s Survey.  The mother’s diets were assessed at 11 and 34 weeks gestation and the children had body fat measurements taken at birth and 4 and 6 years of age.  While there was no difference at birth, the children whose mothers ate diets lower in GI and glycemic load (GL) in early pregnancy were less likely to be carrying extra body fat when they reached 4-6 years.
