Breastfeeding helps with post-pregnancy weight

Obese women who breastfeed their babies exclusively for at least 4 months are less likely to retain weight after pregnancy than those who don’t breastfeed according to a new study published in the journal Pediatrics.

The researchers followed more than 700 women for 6 years after the birth of their child and collected information on breastfeeding habits, pre-pregnancy and post-pregnancy weight. While they didn’t find the same association for normal weight women, those who were obese (BMI >30) who exclusively breastfed for 4 months or longer retained on average 8kg less than those who didn’t breastfeed.
